Making Caring Common

I thought I would share news about a new movement in college admissions known as Making Caring Common. Described in an NYT article on the movement that

appeared yesterday, and Richard Weissbourd (the creator) was on the PBS Newshour this week. It's an interesting movement that is gaining attention and traction (I hope!).

In a nutshell, the movement is about authentic engagement in one's own community and avoiding "window dressing" service projects where students fly to in some exotic or far away locale. Inside the classroom, the movement recommends students take fewer APs, and instead concentrate in greater depth in areas of real interest. The result, they hope, is less stress and a more balanced student. They also recommend ignoring the US News College Ranking. They suggest instead looking at good colleges that will fit your child's personalty and academic profile.
