Colleges versus Universities
As usual, Lynn O'Shaughnessy wrote a great article on why students should look to colleges and smaller universities for more aid, rather than popular research universities. Major research schools like University of California, UCLA, University of Michigan and University of Virginia are highly ranked and highly sought after. Therefore, schools can charge out of state students more money and offer less aid. Additionally, these large universities have large class sizes for students and many have teaching assistants work with students rather than professors. There are many wonderful colleges and universities on Lynn's list that offer a very affordable and high quality college education. We have visited many of them including University of Montana, University of Mississippi and University of Alabama. (This a picture of Ole Miss in February.)
