College for free? Not exactly...

There have been a few articles about the California Community College bill AB2 where community college would be free for the second year for first time students. If you did not know community college is already free for first time students that have not taken a college course previously. The law encourages students to take a full load of classes (12 units) and works well for low and middle income students. If students are claimed as a dependent by their parents and their income exceed $90,000 (single filer) or $160,000 (married) they will not qualify for the waiver. And the bill does not cover books, parking or other expenses. Additionally not all of California's community colleges have elected to participate. So while the idea is a great one, it is important to read the fine print. For more information click here.
